The picture has changed twice since the end of 2025: OpenAI launched its own certification programme, and in 2026 opened a free, assessed course badge to anyone with a ChatGPT account. The formal certification is still invite-only, so the trick is knowing which is which, what each is worth to an employer, and what to take for a skill you can actually show. Here's exactly that.

Partly: there is no ChatGPT certification you can sign up for, but there is a free official badge. The “ChatGPT Certified” certificates sold on course marketplaces are the sellers’ own completion certificates, not anything OpenAI issued, and OpenAI’s own formal credential, OpenAI Certification, is invite-only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces (our OpenAI certification page tracks it). Is there a real ChatGPT certification?
Short answer: partly. OpenAI runs two layers, and only one is open to you. The open one is OpenAI Academy: free courses anyone with a ChatGPT account can take, where completing a course and passing its assessment now earns an OpenAI Academy course badge. The closed one is OpenAI Certification proper, which OpenAI’s help centre lists as invite-only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces. The many “ChatGPT Certified” badges sold elsewhere are neither: OpenAI did not issue them. If you want a credential a recruiter already reads, the alternatives below are the ones to compare.
Is the ChatGPT certification available to enrol in yet?
Only the free badge is: since 21 September 2026, anyone with a ChatGPT account who completes OpenAI Academy’s AI Foundations course and passes its assessment earns an OpenAI Academy course badge. The formal OpenAI Certification, announced in September 2025, is still invite-only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and OpenAI has published no public exam, price or self-enrolment route for it. That is different from how Google, Microsoft, AWS, and IBM operate: those run open, formal certification programs with published exam objectives, proctored tests, and official badges anyone can register for (that's exactly what the AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud AI certifications are). OpenAI's free badge is open and assessed, though OpenAI's pages describe no proctoring for it, and the formal certification is still gated behind workspace invitations — which is why, for most people, the practical move is to take the free badge, earn a credential a recruiter already recognises, and add the formal OpenAI one if it opens up.

Now that OpenAI has a real program, this distinction matters more than ever. Search "ChatGPT certification" and you'll still find dozens of courses — many on Udemy or independent course platforms — issuing certificates with titles like "ChatGPT Certified Professional" or "Certified ChatGPT Expert." These are almost always self-issued completion certificates from an individual instructor or course platform, not the official OpenAI credential and not backed by a university or accreditation body. Don't confuse them with OpenAI's actual AI Foundations or ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers courses.
That doesn't automatically make the underlying course bad — some teach genuinely useful prompting techniques. But it does mean the certificate itself carries little to no weight on a résumé. Applicant-tracking systems and hiring managers are trained to recognize brand names like Google, IBM, Microsoft, AWS, Stanford, and DeepLearning.AI. An unaccredited "ChatGPT Certified" PDF from an anonymous course creator doesn't register the same way.
A simple test before paying for any "ChatGPT certification": who is actually issuing it? If the answer isn't a recognized university, an established AI lab, a major cloud provider, or an industry-recognized platform hosting accredited partners (like Coursera hosting Google, IBM, Vanderbilt, or Stanford content), treat the badge as a personal learning milestone — not a résumé-grade credential.

ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers is OpenAI’s own course, made with Common Sense Media and free on Coursera. Coursera’s page contradicts itself about a certificate: its FAQ says “No certificates, credentials, or reports are awarded in connection with this course”, while the final module’s description promises a “Virtual Teacher Certificate”. Should you wait for the OpenAI Certification?
No, and you do not have to. The free part is open now: take AI Foundations on OpenAI Academy and pass its assessment for the badge, which costs about 70 minutes of course plus a 20-question assessment, and no money. If your employer or university runs ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu, ask whether it has been invited to the OpenAI Certified app, because that is the only way into the formal OpenAI Certification today. How to actually prove your ChatGPT skills to employers
A certificate alone — official or not — rarely closes the gap on its own. What works:
- Pair a recognized certificate with real examples. A finished Prompt Engineering Specialization or Google AI Essentials certificate, plus one or two concrete things you've built or improved with AI, is far more convincing than the certificate alone.
- Quantify the impact where you can. "Used AI prompting to cut report-writing time by 40%" lands better than "ChatGPT Certified."
- Add it to LinkedIn properly. Coursera certificates generate a shareable, verifiable credential link — add it to your LinkedIn "Licenses & Certifications" section rather than just mentioning it in your headline.
- Skip anything that can't tell you who's behind it. If a "ChatGPT certification" course can't clearly name its accrediting institution, assume it won't mean much to a hiring manager either.

If a cheap course teaches you something you can apply on Monday, that is real value regardless of what the certificate is worth. Just do not expect it to do résumé work, and do not list five of them — a long list of unaccredited badges actively signals that the recognised ones are missing.
