Genuinely free AI credentials exist, and the ones worth taking carry a name a recruiter recognises. IBM SkillsBuild — AI Foundations is the strongest of them, with Google Cloud Skills Boost, Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki, Microsoft Learn and AWS Educate close behind. Most Coursera courses also let you preview the first module free; the certificate is paid, and approved financial aid takes a discount off it. What free gets you is a start and a shareable badge; what it does not get you is an assessed credential, which is exactly where these eight stop.
Exam AI-900: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals is retired. The replacement is Exam AI-901: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals, which earns the same Azure AI Fundamentals certification but expects Python and familiarity with REST APIs and SDKs.
All the free options at a glance
Five of the eight cost nothing to take and issue a free badge or certificate on completion. Microsoft Learn records a trophy on your profile there rather than a credential. DeepLearning.AI lets you learn free, but the record of completion needs a paid plan. Coursera is a route, not a course — most of its courses can be previewed free, but the certificate is paid, though financial aid can reduce it. Microsoft Learn and AWS Educate publish no duration and AWS Educate and Kaggle no level, so those cells record what the provider does not tell you rather than a number we guessed.

Free AI courses with a certificate: what “free” really means
Free AI courses with a certificate are rarer than the word suggests. Many “free” courses are free to learn and charge for the record at the end, and one well-known free path ends in a profile trophy rather than a credential.
So the Credential column in the table below says exactly what finishing earns: a free badge or certificate you can share; a trophy on your profile that is not a credential; a free course whose completion record needs a paid plan; or a certificate you pay for, where only the preview is free.

Free courses are perfect for testing the water and building foundations — and yes, the good ones genuinely register with employers (we cover exactly which in are free AI certifications worth anything?). But there are moments when a paid, verifiable certificate pays for itself:
- You're job-hunting now — a recognized certificate on your résumé and LinkedIn helps you stand out and pass screens.
- You want a structured, complete path — paid professional certificates bundle a full curriculum, projects, and a credential.
- You want a portfolio — paid specializations include graded, hands-on projects you can show employers.
If that's you, the real question is which kind of paying, because there are three and they cost very differently. A Coursera subscription (~$49–59/month) buys the provider names a recruiter recognises fastest — Google, IBM, Stanford — and the two we would point a beginner to there are Google AI Essentials (best for beginners) and the Machine Learning Specialization (best foundations). A DataCamp subscription costs less per month and is built around exercises you complete in the browser rather than lectures you watch. A Udemy course is bought once and kept, with no subscription to cancel — the cheapest way to own the teaching, and the only one of the three whose certificate carries no employer recognition at all. Which of those three trades you want is the decision; the two below are where we would start on the platforms that are not Coursera.
What to pay for after the free ones
The free courses above each have a natural paid next step, and it is rarely the expensive one. Matched by where each free course leaves you:
- After IBM SkillsBuild or Elements of AI: if you want to find out whether AI is your direction before committing a term, Intro to AI: A Beginner’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence on Udemy is two and a half hours, bought once; if you want the whole tool landscape, The Complete AI Guide below.
- After Microsoft Learn’s AI Fundamentals path: the credential the free path prepares for is Azure AI Fundamentals, whose exam is now AI-901 — it replaced AI-900 on 30 June 2026 and expects basic Python; our Azure AI Fundamentals study guide covers the exam itself.

If free left you with the reading but nothing you were made to practise, this is the shortest paid step that changes that.

The other honest answer for a reader who came here for free: bought once rather than subscribed to, so nothing keeps charging while life gets in the way. Why this course, and its limitations
A broad non-coding introduction to ChatGPT, Claude and generative AI, bought once. Its breadth can mean more viewing than one work task needs; it is orientation, not a professional qualification. A course that many people finish and rate is market evidence of skill value; the certificate itself remains an unassessed completion record.

Are free AI certifications worth anything?
Yes, with one qualification that matters: they prove initiative and build real skills, but they are not interchangeable with a paid, verifiable certificate. A free badge from IBM SkillsBuild, Google Cloud Skills Boost, Kaggle or the University of Helsinki's Elements of AI carries a name a recruiter recognises, and it shows you went and learned something without being told to — which is exactly the signal a career-changer needs early.
What free credentials do not reliably do is pass a filter. Where a posting names a specific certification, or a screening tool checks for one, the free equivalent usually will not match it. They also vary in what you actually receive: some issue a shareable badge, some a certificate, and some nothing at all.

Can I get a free AI certificate I can put on LinkedIn?
Yes — five of the eight options on this page issue something shareable at no cost. IBM SkillsBuild and Google Cloud Skills Boost both award digital badges you can add straight to a LinkedIn profile. Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki and Kaggle's micro-courses both issue free certificates of completion. AWS Educate gives completion badges for its generative AI courses.
Three do not, and it is worth knowing which before you invest the hours. Microsoft Learn's AI Fundamentals path is free training with achievements, but the Azure certification itself needs a paid exam. DeepLearning.AI's short courses are the most current free generative AI training available and issue no free certificate (a completion record needs the paid Pro plan) — take those for the skills, not the credential. Coursera is the eighth case: most courses let you preview the first module free and select courses offer a free "Full Course, No Certificate" option, but the certificate itself needs a payment or an approved financial aid application.
Is Google AI Essentials free?
No — it is a paid course, and Coursera's own FAQ says it cannot be taken for free. It is $49 a month in the US and Canada, or included if you already hold Coursera Plus, and a free trial does not make the certificate free: Coursera’s trial screen says the certificate comes “when you complete after your first payment” (seen on the Machine Learning Specialization on 24 September 2026).
The route to the certificate for less is financial aid, a discount off the fee whose size Coursera says depends on your application and where you live; you apply per course and Coursera asks you to allow up to 16 days for a decision. Its Coursera page does carry an “Enroll for free” button, which (checked 24 September 2026) enrols you in the first course, Introduction to AI, straight away with no payment step — a start, not a free programme. Are there free generative AI courses that give you a certificate?
Yes, and the useful distinction is not whether they are free but what you walk away holding. Google Cloud's Introduction to Generative AI is the shortest verified route: about 45 minutes, beginner level, free, and it issues a shareable badge — Google's own course page published those figures when we last checked it on 11 September 2026. AWS Educate's Intro to Generative AI and IBM SkillsBuild's AI track also cover generative AI and also end in a free badge.
The trade worth knowing: DeepLearning.AI's short courses are the most current generative-AI teaching available free anywhere — prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation and agents, taught by the people building the field — and they issue no certificate at all. So if the credential is the point, take the Google or AWS badge; if the skill is the point, take DeepLearning.AI and accept you will have nothing to show for it but what you can do.
A badge is not a certification. None of these is assessed by an examiner, and none will pass a screening filter that names a specific credential.
