Is there an OpenAI certification right now?
Partly, and OpenAI draws the line itself. There are two layers with its name on them:
- OpenAI Academy courses — free, self-paced and open to anyone with a ChatGPT account. AI Foundations takes about 70 minutes; complete it and pass its assessment (20 scenario-based questions, 80% to pass, retakes allowed any time) and Accredible emails you an OpenAI Academy course badge.
- OpenAI Certifications — the formal credential announced in September 2025, with its first courses in December 2025, delivered through the OpenAI Certified app inside ChatGPT and issued through Coursera and Credly. OpenAI’s help centre lists the app as available only to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, by invitation.
OpenAI’s help centre says Academy course certificates “are not OpenAI Certifications, do not represent a formal OpenAI credential, and do not guarantee eligibility for a future certification.” So an individual can earn the first today and cannot enrol in the second on their own. What has OpenAI actually announced?
In date order, from OpenAI’s own posts:
- 4 September 2025 — “Expanding economic opportunity with AI”: OpenAI introduces OpenAI Certifications alongside a planned OpenAI Jobs Platform, commits to certifying 10 million Americans by 2030, and names Walmart among its launch partners.
- 9 December 2025 — “Launching our first OpenAI Certifications courses”: AI Foundations in ChatGPT through pilots with employers and public-sector partners (Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, BCG, Accenture and others), and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers on Coursera. Coursera, ETS and Credly were named as partners on learning design, assessment and credentials.
- 12 June 2026 — three courses on OpenAI Academy: AI Foundations, Applied AI Foundations, and Agents and Workflows, with course completion certificates.
- 21 September 2026 — learning paths for knowledge workers, developers, leaders, educators and college students, and course assessments: “Learners earn an OpenAI Academy course badge by passing the course assessment.”
What OpenAI has not published is a price, a public exam or a self-enrolment route for the formal certification. Treat any figure or date for those as unconfirmed until it appears on OpenAI’s own pages.

How could an OpenAI credential reshape the market?
Brand gravity is the whole story. Recruiters pattern-match issuer names, and few names carry more AI association than OpenAI's. If the assessment is real — proctored or otherwise verifiable — an OpenAI credential could become the default literacy signal very quickly, the way Google AI Essentials became the default brand-name course. If the assessment is soft, the market will discount it just as quickly; scale and rigour pull in opposite directions, and which wins is the thing to watch.
The price scenario has half-arrived: the Academy badge is free, at OpenAI's distribution scale. That puts pressure on paid literacy certificates whose only moat is brand-plus-basics. It puts little on credentials built on proctored exams or hands-on evidence, because a badge anyone can retake until they pass says less than either.
What should you take while the rollout matures?
Take the free badge now: about 70 minutes, and it is OpenAI’s own. Then decide what you need it to do. For a credential a recruiter already reads, take Google’s AI Professional Certificate, or Google AI Essentials if you want the shorter one. The Professional Certificate’s walkthroughs use Gemini and Google’s apps, so they will not match a ChatGPT workplace; what carries over to whatever OpenAI ships is the prompting, verification and workflow design underneath, which is model-agnostic. Differently positioned, not straight substitutes. Google AI Essentials certifies general workplace AI skill under a search-and-workspace brand; Microsoft's credentials certify platform depth on Azure; an OpenAI credential would certify fluency with the tools most office workers already use daily, issued by the company that makes them. For hiring managers, the practical question stays the same across all three: does the badge represent assessment or attendance? The watchlist: signals that would change our recommendation
Five things to watch, each checkable on OpenAI's official pages:
- Proctoring or verification — the Academy assessment is retakeable and OpenAI's pages mention no invigilation; any move toward verified assessment upgrades the signal sharply.
- Tier structure — a professional or developer tier would compete with practitioner exams, not just literacy badges.
- Access and pricing — the Academy layer is free; the formal certification's first public enrolment route or price will say whether it is a rigour play or a reach play.
- Employer adoption — named companies requiring or preferring the credential in job specs, not just partnership press releases.
- Recertification — any currency requirement would make it the first literacy credential that expires, a meaningful differentiator.
When one of these moves, this page's verdict moves with it — that is what a tracker is for.
Where coverage of the OpenAI certification gets it wrong
Most of it treats the announcement as the product. Course-sellers rushed out 'OpenAI certification prep' for a credential without a published syllabus; news coverage repeated partnership numbers as if distribution equalled value; and social feeds framed it as the certificate that will make every other one obsolete. All three moves skip the only question that matters: what does the assessment actually verify? A credential's worth is set by what it takes to fail it, and until that is public, preparation courses are selling maps of an unmapped country.
The equal and opposite error is dismissal. OpenAI enters this market with more brand gravity than any current issuer, real distribution partners and a training platform already live. Ignoring it because version one looks soft would repeat the mistake made about every OpenAI product launch so far. The right posture is neither pre-ordering nor scoffing: build on what exists today, and check the watchlist quarterly.
Verdict
Take the free OpenAI Academy badge this week, and do not plan your next three months around the invite-only certification. Add Google’s AI Professional Certificate if your CV needs a name recruiters already read, and let the Academy course cover ChatGPT itself, since Google’s walkthroughs are in Gemini. Revisit this page (or OpenAI's official announcements) quarterly, and treat any 'OpenAI certification prep' course as premature until a syllabus is public. The Academy part is: the courses and their course badges cost nothing. OpenAI has not published a price for the formal OpenAI Certification, which is invite-only through ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, so any figure you see for it did not come from OpenAI.
Whether it is proctored matters more than whether it is free. The Academy assessment can be retaken any time and OpenAI's pages mention no invigilation, so at OpenAI's scale the badge will become common and signal little on its own, the way a free badge everyone holds always does. A proctored assessment stays scarce because most people will not sit an invigilated exam. Watch that detail rather than the price.
Is an OpenAI certification better than Google AI Essentials?
Not yet. Google AI Essentials carries a name recruiters already read; the OpenAI Academy badge follows about 70 minutes of course and a 20-question assessment OpenAI describes no proctoring for, which is a lighter signal. Take the OpenAI badge anyway — it is free and quick — and treat a Google certificate as the one that does CV work: Google’s longer AI Professional Certificate scores higher with us than Essentials does.
The two are not substitutes in any case. Essentials teaches workplace workflows across several tools; OpenAI's courses are about OpenAI's products, which is narrower and deeper on that stack. If your organisation runs on ChatGPT, both are worth having, and the free one does not make the other redundant.
Does ChatGPT have its own certification?
Not as a standalone exam. OpenAI's open route is OpenAI Academy: the free AI Foundations course is taught with ChatGPT, and completing it and passing its assessment earns an OpenAI Academy course badge. Anything else sold as a ChatGPT certification comes from a third party with no relationship to OpenAI, whatever its branding suggests. Some of those courses teach perfectly good material; none of them issues a credential OpenAI recognises, and a screener who knows the product will notice. If you want a listable credential for these skills today, take one from an issuer whose name carries independently.
Should I wait for the OpenAI certification before getting certified?
No. The free part is open now, so there is nothing to wait for: take AI Foundations on OpenAI Academy and pass its assessment for the badge. The formal certification is invite-only through employer and university workspaces, and OpenAI has given no date for opening it to individuals.
Building a plan around a date the issuer has not given is how people lose a year to something that arrives later and smaller than advertised. The prompting, verification and workflow skills in today's certificates transfer directly to whatever OpenAI ships; if the formal credential opens and it is good, you will be better placed to pass it, not worse.
