Quick answer
The IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate is a thorough beginner programme for people who want Python as well as spreadsheets in their first analyst toolkit, and we rate it 3.8 out of 5. Its eleven courses run from Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics dashboards to Python taught from zero, SQL from Python notebooks and a capstone, at 180 hours by Coursera's course cards. It is long, and it runs on a Coursera subscription priced by country. Google's Data Analytics Certificate, which we score a little higher, is the alternative to weigh first.
Why we score it 3.8 / 5
IBM's eleven-course programme for beginners: Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics dashboards, Python taught from zero, SQL from Python, analysis and visualisation with pandas and NumPy, a capstone, and courses on generative AI and the job search, at 180 hours by Coursera's course cards. We value the practice, 141 assignments and projects from Excel pivot tables to a housing-price regression, and an IBM Professional Certificate recommended by ACE and FIBAA for up to 12 college credits. What holds the score down is payoff and price: a beginner certificate is unlikely on its own to change pay or role, and it runs on a Coursera subscription priced by country.

This review covers what the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate teaches across its eleven courses, the projects you build, what it costs and how long it takes, how it compares with Google's beginner certificate and IBM's own Data Science programme, and who should take something else. Every fact in it comes from the certificate's Coursera page as it stood on 9 October 2026.
What is the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate?
It is a Coursera Professional Certificate made by IBM for people with no background in data. Coursera's page says “No degree or prior experience required. All you need is basic computer literacy, high school math, and comfort with numbers.” The page lists eight instructors, among them the IBM Skills Network Team and Joseph Santarcangelo, a data scientist at IBM.
It starts where most office workers already are, in spreadsheets, and moves to code: two courses in Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics, which Coursera describes as working “without having to write any code”, then Python from scratch, SQL from Python notebooks, and analysis and visualisation in Python. It finishes with a capstone and two courses on generative AI and the job search.
On 9 October 2026 the page showed 588,388 learners already enrolled and an average of 4.6 stars from 99,737 reviews, an average across its eleven courses rather than a rating of the certificate as a whole. The page's own data gives a launch date of 8 July 2024, which the page does not display, and the page states no update date.
What do the eleven courses cover?
The eleven courses in the programme, in the order IBM and Coursera list them:
- Introduction to Data Analytics
- Excel Basics for Data Analysis
- Data Visualization and Dashboards with Excel and Cognos
- Python for Data Science, AI & Development
- Python Project for Data Science
- Databases and SQL for Data Science with Python
- Data Analysis with Python
- Data Visualization with Python
- IBM Data Analyst Capstone Project
- Generative AI: Enhance your Data Analytics Career
- Data Analyst Career Guide and Interview Preparation
Coursera recommends taking them in order. The sequence falls into four parts:
- The role and spreadsheets (courses 1 to 3). What a data analyst does and which tools they use, then Excel for analysis, then charts and dashboards in Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics.
- Python and SQL (courses 4 to 6). Python for Data Science, AI & Development assumes no programming experience; a Python project follows, then SQL taught from Python notebooks.
- Analysis and visualisation in Python (courses 7 and 8). Importing and cleaning data, exploratory analysis and predictive models in Python, then visualisation and dashboards with libraries such as Matplotlib, Seaborn and Plotly.
- The capstone and the career courses (courses 9 to 11). A capstone on real datasets, a course on generative AI in data analytics, and a career guide with interview preparation.
The projects are what set it apart. Coursera's page lists an inventory analysis of fleet vehicles with Excel pivot tables, an interactive KPI dashboard from car sales data, financial data analysed with pandas, SQL queries on census, crime and school data, regression models that predict housing prices, and a Python dashboard on the reliability of US domestic flights, before the capstone. The page's data counts 141 assignments across the programme.
One thing to know before you compare programmes: five of its eleven courses are the same courses, under the same titles, as in IBM's Data Science Professional Certificate — the two Python courses, the SQL course and the two Python analysis and visualisation courses. Taking both programmes means meeting those five twice.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
Time. The IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate runs to 180 hours by Coursera's course cards. Coursera's headline gives a pace instead, four months at 10 hours a week. The Python courses are the longest stretch, and they are where a learner new to code should expect to spend more time than the cards suggest.
Cost. Coursera's page states no price for it: it is billed as a Coursera subscription priced by country, and it is included with Coursera Plus. Open the certificate's page from where you live to see what you would pay, and remember that a subscription keeps billing until you cancel, so the hours you can give it each week decide the total.
If the fee is the barrier. Coursera's financial aid is a discount you apply for one course at a time, from each course's page. Coursera says a decision can take up to 16 days, and starting a free trial cancels a pending application. Our Coursera financial aid guide walks through it.
Credit and badges. You earn a Professional Certificate from IBM and an IBM digital badge. Coursera's page says the programme is ACE and FIBAA recommended for up to 12 college credits and 6 ECTS credits, shared through a Credly badge, and its FAQ adds that acceptance is up to each institution and not guaranteed. There is no certification exam.
Check the price & enrol on Coursera →How we checked this. We list the cost as Coursera Plus subscription (priced per country). Source: Coursera certificate page, read 2026-10-09: 'Included with Coursera Plus' and 'Financial aid available'; neither the page nor its FAQ states a price, so no figure is published. Where we give a figure, the source says when we read it on the provider's page. We re-read prices by hand and publish no figure we cannot source — where a provider prices regionally, we say so rather than quote a number that is wrong for most readers.
Pros and cons
✓ What we liked
- Assumes no experience, and teaches Python from zero
- Project-heavy: Coursera counts 141 assignments, from Excel pivot tables to a housing-price regression
- An IBM Professional Certificate, recommended by ACE for up to 12 college credits

Not sure this is the right one for you?
Tell the picker about your background and what you want the certificate to do, and it narrows the list to the one or two courses we would start with. It suggests only our affiliate partners’ courses, and says so before it suggests anything.
Try the AI Certification Picker →Who should take it, and who should skip it?
Take it if you are starting from zero and want Python to be a real part of your first analyst toolkit rather than a single course at the end; if you like learning by building, since the projects are the backbone of the programme; or if you already hold Coursera Plus, which includes it.
Skip it if you want the shortest route to an analyst job: DataCamp's Associate Data Analyst in SQL covers SQL in far fewer hours. Skip it if your target employers run on Power BI, where Microsoft's Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate is the better use of the time. And if you might go on to data science, consider IBM's Data Science Professional Certificate instead of taking both, since they share five courses.
How it compares with other beginner analytics programmes
The table below compares five beginner data programmes on provider, level, time, coding and our rating. All five are Beginner; they run from about 36 hours to 180.
| Programme | Provider | Level | Time | Coding | Our rating | Enrol |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate | IBM (Coursera) | Beginner | ~180 hrs | Python and SQL, taught | 3.8 / 5 | Coursera → |
| Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate | Google (Coursera) | Beginner | ~152 hrs | SQL and Python, taught | 4.0 / 5 | Coursera → |
| IBM Data Science Professional Certificate | IBM (Coursera) | Beginner | ~178 hrs | Python and SQL, taught | 3.9 / 5 | Coursera → |
| Associate Data Analyst in SQL | DataCamp | Beginner | ~39 hrs | SQL | 3.8 / 5 | DataCamp → |
| Data Analyst in Python | DataCamp | Beginner | ~36 hrs | Python | 3.7 / 5 | DataCamp → |
IBM Data Analyst or Google Data Analytics? They are the two long beginner analyst certificates on Coursera. Google's spends its middle on spreadsheets, SQL and Tableau and gives Python one course; IBM's starts in Excel and Cognos and gives Python several courses, with SQL taught from Python. We score the Google Data Analytics Certificate 4.0 out of 5, and this one 3.8; most of the gap is cost and currency: Coursera states Google's US price and IBM's page states none. Choose IBM if Python matters to you more than Tableau; otherwise start with Google.
IBM Data Science. The sibling programme shares five courses with this one and replaces the spreadsheet and dashboard courses with data science methodology and machine learning. If you are aiming at data science rather than analysis, take that one rather than both.
The DataCamp tracks. Far shorter, browser-based and on a DataCamp subscription; each goes deep on one language. They end in a DataCamp completion record rather than an IBM certificate, so they suit a learner who wants the skill sooner and cares less about the issuer's name.
Does the certificate get you a job?
Not by itself. The IBM name and the ACE credit recommendation help an application, and the final course prepares you for interviews, but junior analyst hiring turns on what you can show. Here this programme helps: its projects give you several pieces of finished work, from a dashboard to a regression model.
Make them yours. Rework one project on a dataset from a field you know, write a one-page summary of the question, the method and the finding, and put the notebook and the summary somewhere an interviewer can open. Our guide on how to become a data analyst covers the rest of the route.
Is the IBM Data Analyst certificate worth it?
Yes, for a beginner who wants Python from the start and learns best by building. We rate it 3.8 out of 5: it teaches a wide toolkit from zero, its projects leave you with real work to show, and it ends in an IBM certificate with an ACE credit recommendation. What holds the score down is payoff and price: a beginner certificate is unlikely on its own to change your pay or role, and it runs on a subscription whose price Coursera's page does not state.
If Tableau and a stated price matter more to you than extra Python, Google's Data Analytics Certificate is the alternative we would weigh first.

Paid through Coursera rather than through the provider, by subscription or per course. Coursera prices by country: its pricing page shows the Coursera Plus plans and the price for your country.
Frequently asked questions
Is the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate worth it?
For a beginner who wants Python as part of a first analyst toolkit, yes. We rate it 3.8 out of 5. It teaches Excel, IBM Cognos Analytics, Python and SQL from zero, and its projects — from a pivot-table inventory analysis to a housing-price regression — leave you with real work to show.
It is less good value if you only need SQL and spreadsheets for a first analyst job, where a shorter programme gets you there sooner, or if you plan to take IBM's Data Science certificate as well, since the two share five courses.
Google's Data Analytics Certificate scores a little higher, mainly because Coursera states its US price and we judge it more current, so compare the two before you choose.
How long does the IBM Data Analyst certificate take?
It runs to 180 hours by Coursera's course cards, across eleven courses. Coursera's headline gives a pace rather than a length, four months at 10 hours a week.
Your own time depends on where you start. The Excel courses go quickly for anyone who already uses spreadsheets; the Python courses take longer for a learner new to code, and they are the part most worth taking slowly.
Because it is billed as a subscription, the hours you can give it each week also decide what it costs you, so plan your weeks before you enrol.
IBM Data Analyst or Google Data Analytics: which is better?
We score the Google Data Analytics Certificate a little higher, 4.0 out of 5, against 3.8 for IBM's. The gap is mostly cost and currency: Coursera states Google's price for the US and Canada and IBM's page states none.
The real difference is the toolkit. Google's spends most of its time on spreadsheets, SQL and Tableau and gives Python one course. IBM's starts in Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics, then gives Python several courses and teaches SQL from Python notebooks.
Choose IBM if you want Python to be a real part of your first job's toolkit. Choose Google if you want Tableau, a stated price and the more widely taken programme. Taking both is rarely worth the second subscription.
Does the IBM Data Analyst certificate require coding?
Not before you start. Coursera's page asks for basic computer literacy, high-school maths and comfort with numbers, and the first three courses work in Excel and IBM Cognos Analytics without code.
From the fourth course it teaches coding: Python for Data Science, AI & Development assumes no programming experience, and the courses after it use Python with pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn and Plotly, and teach SQL from Python notebooks.
So you will finish able to write Python and SQL for analysis. If you want to avoid code altogether, a Power BI programme is the better fit.
Is the IBM Data Analyst certificate free?
No. Coursera's page states no price for it: it is billed as a Coursera subscription priced by country, and it is included with Coursera Plus. Open the certificate's page from where you live to see the price that applies to you.
If the fee is the barrier, Coursera's financial aid is a discount you apply for one course at a time from each course's page. Coursera says a decision can take up to 16 days, and that starting a free trial cancels a pending application.
